Summerspeak

Summerspeak, established in 1989 by Speech-Language Pathologists Sandy Collins and Carol Westdal, provides a concentrated period of therapy in a relaxed environment with a small group of children and adolescents who stutter and their families. Participants develop awareness of their own patterns of fluent speech, and learn to increase their use; as necessary, fluency facilitating strategies are incorporated. Self-monitoring abilities improve, and parents learn to provide positive and specific feedback. A variety of activities are used to facilitate the transfer of fluency skills to typical social interactions and settings.

       Summerspeak is located in Walnut Grove Park in Langley, BC, within walking distance of recreational activities and many opportunities for the practice of emerging fluency skills. Ms. Collins and Ms. Westdal bring enthusiasm, dedication, and extensive expertise developed during their 24 years together providing intensive therapy for individuals who stutter. BCAPS has limited funds available to those with a demonstrated need to obtain stuttering therapy and who are in need of financial assistance to attend speech therapy clinics in British Columbia, operated by qualified speech language pathologists. See Funding

The British Columbia Association of People Who Stutter (BCAPS), established in 1992 as an organization of self help groups throughout the province to advocate, inform and educate on behalf of people who stutter in British Columbia.

One of the projects we have undertaken is to improve the accessibility of speech language therapy services to recent immigrants to this province and to those whose native tongue is not one of Canada's official languages.

To this end, BCAPS is pleased to provide you with a list of Speech Language Pathologists who can offer their services in a language other than English. This list was compiled in part from the Private Practice Roster of the British Columbia Association of Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists (1-877-BCASLPA or www.bcaslpa.bc.ca).
